2021 Association of Licensed Architects Design Awards

Renovation and adaptive reuse of a historic tractor factory, a clinic expansion that facilitates well-being and a Utah home that celebrates its awe-inspiring location are among the projects winning top honors at the Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) 23rd Annual Design Awards, which recognized projects for design achievement.

A total of 31 awards were presented in commercial/industrial, institutional, mixed use, single-family homes, multi-family homes and unbuilt categories.

“This year’s Gold Award winners were exceptional,” said Jeff Budgell, President of the Association of Licensed Architects. “The project designs were inviting, imaginative and featured a sense of place,” he added.

Gold Award winners included: Agricultural Classroom Room & Lab, Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, IL, designed by Demonica Kemper Architects, LLC; Grant & Camilla Bishop Residence, St. George, Utah, designed by Arthur Dyson Architect; Gore Residence, Chicago, IL, designed by Level Architecture Incorporated; Lincoln Savings Bank Central Campus, Waterloo, IA, designed by INVISION Architecture; Monroe County Hospital & Clinics Outpatient Expansion, Albia, IA, designed by INVISION Architecture.

“We had more than 100 design award entries this year,” said Joanne Sullivan, ALA Executive Director. “Our judges praised the winning projects, in particular, for qualities such as use of natural light, attention to detail and creative use of materials.”

ALA 2021 Design Awards entries were evaluated by a panel of judges, including Nicola Springer, AIA, LEED AP, Kirksey Architecture; Tomoo (Tom) Fujikawa, ALA, NCARB, Fujikawa Johnson Gobel Architects; Martin Felsen, FAIA, UrbanLab; William Schwarz, ALA, Schwarz Lewis Design Group; Gordon Klaus, ALA, NCARB, Three i Design and Chris Groesbeck, AIA, LEED AP, UrbanLab.

This year’s highest honor, the Don Erickson Presidential Award, will be announced and awarded at the ALA Design Awards presentation ceremony, to be held on April 8. The award is named for the founder and first president of ALA, Don Erickson (1929 – 2006), who was instrumental in forming the association in 1998, and was a student and protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The 2021 ALA Design Awards Program is sponsored by Andersen Windows and Doors and Hines Supply.
