This home is one of the original Stewart Hartshorn houses in the Short Hills Park Historic District of New Jersey, constructed in the late 1800’s. There have been several additions and renovations over the years, some of which greatly compromised the historic character of the house.
We restored the house both inside and out while also adding critically needed family living space. Our design removed an ugly sunroom and introduced a two-story addition. This seamlessly accommodated an updated kitchen, new family room and mudroom on the first floor, master suite on the second floor, and playroom in the basement. Improving the home’s functionality without detracting from the important historical features of the structure was a key goal in our design. The driveway was also reimagined, creating a sense of discovery as the home is revealed which reinforces Hartshorn’s original philosophy of the house existing within a picturesque landscape.
