Orewa Kitchen - NKBA winner 2018; TIDA winner 2019

Perched on the edge of Orewa’s clifftop in north Auckland, this modern home boasts an entertainer’s kitchen made for a crowd. Designed by architectural designer Toni Roberts (BArch CKDNZ) of Kitchen Architecture this space was created to capture the wide sea-and-island views while providing the optimum flow of activities for both the cook and the family as a whole.

The design won Toni three awards in 2018's Excellence in Design NKBA competition: Supreme Kitchen Design Runner-Up, Auckland Chapter Runner-Up and CDS Best Kitchen Design Runner-Up. The judges commented how well the kitchen honours the industrial and natural materiality of the home”.
They said, “A custom stainless steel ventilation cabinet, a rugged granite bench chosen for its tactile feel and natural character, and practical storage systems are special features in a kitchen that celebrates contemporary conveniences and family connections.”

Creating flow to the outdoors and a welcoming space for family connection were also key. The end result is a kitchen with seven Activity Zones™, designed to function effortlessly for one cook or several if catering for a large number of guests.

“Through the strategic positioning of sliding glass door openings, the kitchen is socially connected to both seaward and poolside views, yet isn’t a thoroughfare,” explains Toni. “The home chefs are visibly connected to their space and guests, and able to integrate and join in the party with ease.”

For the avid baker in the family, Toni also designed a dedicated baking pantry behind two large doors that pocket-slide away for full access when needed. “This acts like a mini scullery in that dishes such as desserts can be prepared ahead and hidden away until later,” she explains.

With industrial elements of the house serving as inspiration for the kitchen design, the generous island features a rugged charcoal granite benchtop in a leathered finish, and a handcrafted, blackened steel frame that gives a bold foundation to its structure.

Raw welds are exposed for authenticity to the industrial vibe throughout the new home. A complex & highly detailed steel workshop drawing in 3D isometric ensured these random weld joins didn't interfere with the clean flush door panels.

“The kitchen is the natural hub for the whole family, so the inclination for clutter is a given,” says Toni, who counts keeping mess contained as one of her specialities.

The owners were keen to see as much of the semi-porous concrete blocks on the back wall, yet concerned for cleaning oil splashes. To solve this challenge, Toni conceived a custom stainless-steel ventilation cabinet with a retractable 6mm-thin steel-sheet splashback.
